In a world filled with anxiety, strife, and confusion, the kerygma is the best-kept secret the Church has to offer the world. Unfortunately, Jesus never meant this to be a secret at all; He sent His disciples to proclaim it from the housetops! Discover the peace, purpose, and power of the simple Gospel message unveiled by Jesus: in the Father who first loved us, the Son who came to restore us to God, and the Holy Spirit who enlivens each disciple of Christ with power from on High.
The kerygma is the heart of the Christian message; the proclamation of God’s love for us and His plan since the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:1-14). The recent Directory for Catechesis puts it this way “The kerygma, the fire of the Spirit [that] is given in the form of tongues and leads us to believe in Jesus Christ who, by his death and resurrection, reveals and communicates to us the Father’s infinite mercy,’ is simultaneously an act of proclamation and the content of the proclamation itself, which unveils the Gospel and makes it present’” (DC #58).
This proclamation is the heart of the Faith:
“‘Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen and free you.’ This first proclamation is called ‘first’ not because it exists at the beginning and can then be forgotten or replaced by other more important things. It is first in a qualitative sense, because it is the principal proclamation, the one which we must hear again and again in different ways, the one which we must announce.” —Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium #164
Whether a life-long disciple or a budding believer, this proclamation of the Gospel will draw you to fall in love with God; It will ground you in the essentials of our faith and help you grasp the message we need to proclaim to others.
